Women and golf (a bit of history)

The history of women's participation in golf is complex and varied. Golf has been played for centuries, but it was largely a male-dominated sport until the 20th century.

In the early days of golf, women were often excluded from playing on courses or even attending events. However, as the sport became more popular and organized, women began to participate more actively.

One notable milestone for women's golf came in 1894, when the Ladies' Golf Union was founded in Great Britain. This organization helped to promote women's golf and organize competitions.

In the United States, women's golf gained popularity in the early 20th century, with the formation of the Women's Western Golf Association in 1901 and the Women's Metropolitan Golf Association in 1907.

However, even then, women were often limited to playing on certain days or at certain times and were frequently subjected to discriminatory rules and regulations.

It wasn't until the 1960s and 1970s that women's golf truly began to gain recognition as a professional sport. In 1950, the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) was founded, and it has since become one of the premier women's sports organizations in the world.

Today, women's golf is a popular and respected sport, with many talented athletes competing at the highest levels.
